The mono-crystalline panels are also commonly known as the single crystal silicon solar panels. These are not only the most efficient in terms of electricity generation but they cost the most as well. Their construction includes mono-crystalline solar cells, which are rounded and have to be obtained from a single crystal of silicon, created into solar panels of the same color, which is generally black or dark blue.

  • They last for over 25 years
  • Their electric rate return is approximately 16%, and
  • They are also the ideal choice if you have limited space

Poly-crystalline Silicon Solar Panels

The poly-crystalline panels are also known as the multi-crystalline silicon solar panels. These are constructed by the fusion of cells obtained from various silicon crystals and then by pouring hot silicon over them to create a mold in the form of a panel. These square solar panels are less efficient in terms of electricity generation as compared to the former, although they require less space.

  • They cost less compared to the mono-crystalline solar panels

Thin Film Solar Panels

The cheapest of the three types of solar panels are the thin film solar panels. This is because they are constructed by coating glass or steel with a fine layer of amorphous or non crystalline silicon, cadmium telluride, diselenide or copper indium. The fact that they are the cheapest also indicates that they are the least efficient compared to the previous two. This means that multiple thin film panels are required to generate the same amount of power as a single crystalline panel.

Advantages of thin film solar panels:

  • The electricity return rate for these is approximately 11%
  • They are easier to use, in terms of the fact that they are light and flexible
  • They are the cheapest type of solar panels
  • They are not that durable, but can last a few years
  • They also require more space for installation, so are ideal for large spaces.
