Importance of solar energy:

These days, more people are becoming aware of the depletion of the energy resources of our planet. Alternative energy sources such as solar energy are gaining much popularity because of this reason. The earth’s atmosphere is rich in carbon emissions now, and acid rain falls heavily on cities causing diseases and even cancers. Alternative means of energy generation are the answer to reducing the carbon foot print left by man on earth. These alternative means of energy generation including solar energy, wind energy, wave power and tidal power don’t deplete the earth of its natural resources and come from a renewable source. They are emission free and help take the load off the fossil fuel reserves of the earth.

Solar energy is by far the easiest alternative energy means to tap into, as the sun shines brightly all over the earth. Wind power, wave power, geothermal energy and tidal power all require heavy machinery and expensive equipment to generate electricity or heat energy. Solar energy simply requires Photo Voltaic panels to generate current electricity. With the help of Photo Voltaic panels, electricity can be generated for appliances of any size and even for homes, buildings and industries.

Solar energy is used in industrial scales for space cooling, space heating, water purification or distillation, sterilization and even for providing lighting. The photovoltaic panels are used in industries to conserve the natural resources of the earth and to reduce pollution. Solar energy is used by the photovoltaic panels on an industrial scale, and the electrical energy produced by solar energy helps to eliminate large-scale pollution, such as coal, gas or fuel oil emissions produced by factories and industries. Not all industries can use solar energy to power all of their purposes but solar energy can still be considered a major secondary source of energy.

Photovoltaic power plants are under construction in a many places on the earth to collect solar energy on a large scale, and convert it into electrical energy to be used to power homes and even buildings. Parks that have park lights powered exclusively by photovoltaic panels and solar energy are also being built across the western world.

Architecture and urban planning:

Today, houses and buildings are being constructed with built in PV panels called “building integrated photovoltaic panels”. These buildings are constructed with special photovoltaic panels built in on their roofs or window panes that can directly use solar energy and convert it into current electricity. These solar panels can act as the secondary or back up source or even in some circumstances as the primary sources of electricity generation.

Rural electrification:

In developing countries, where electricity generating grid stations are usually many miles apart, many villages have no electricity at all. Photovoltaic panels in power plants have been set up to provide electricity to homes, schools and buildings in these villages. These Photovoltaic Power plants act as a primary source of electricity for these villages.
