Roof Solar Panels

One of the quickest ways of implementing clean, renewable solar energy is the purchase and installation of residential solar panels. An advantage here is the fact that even if you cannot afford a large solar energy system to power your whole home, you can start off by installing a few small solar panels which have the capacity to generate enough electricity to power a few household appliances. This can allow you to save a significant amount of money per month even when your house is still connected to the conventional power grid.
Photovoltaic Solar panels:
The most dominating form of the implementation of solar power in homes is the installation of photovoltaic cells and panels. These panels have been designed to receive the light of the sun using multiple collectors; these then convert this energy to electricity with the help of another device known as an inverter. The main purpose of the inverter is the conversion of direct current to alternating current which can be used to power household appliances. These PV systems are generally equipped with storage batteries in order to provide them with back-up energy in case of insufficient light from the sun which usually occurs due to remote installations.
Solar Thermal
This type of system is generally used for heating purposes such as heating water for households, including swimming pools and hot water tanks. In this system, there are a couple of storage tanks which are well insulated for retaining heat. It also includes a few collectors which receive the light of the sun. Active systems include controls and circulating pumps whereas passive system does not contain these features. In case of a 2 tank system, the water is preheated in the secondary tank before it is sent into the primary tank of the house as needed. In the single tank system however, the two water heaters (i.e. the primary heater and the solar heater) are combined in the form of a bigger tank.

Concentrated Solar

This type of system uses reflectors for the concentration of excessive sunlight to fit the surface of much smaller collectors in order to trap and retain this heat energy. Some of the many application of this particular system include solar cookers for the preparation of food the environmentally friendly way, and certain application in the industrial energy zone such as massive fields having utility scale mirrors. These are used for mass production of energy.

Advantages for home owners:

  • The installation of residential solar panels can actually make a huge difference in the energy consumption of a single house.
  • Home owners can actually benefit more than huge companies, as the time taken for the solar panels to start saving money in utility bills is much less as compared to huge companies.
  • The federal and the state governments also offer many incentives’ to home owners for installing solar panels as well.
  • Electricity that is created in excess can also be sold to the grid, which enables home owners to actually generate more money by installing solar panels.
